Q: Will these things really work?
A: I have seen this program work first hand. With my children, even though there are hard days, they have a structure and a fun “thing” to fall back on. It has lessened the fighting and encouraged the getting along. It has helped set a focus in their lives and in mine too.
Q: I feel like I have so little time with my kids, I work all day, I come home, I am tired, what do I do?
A: I understand that in many families both parents work, leaving little time to be with children. It is amazing how a small amount of time can benefit and make a difference. There may only be time for one mission during the day for the Special Agent Mission Program. That is great! The You Are a Treasure Box program can be talked about in the morning, afternoon or evening. It can be included as part of a bedtime routine. Ten minutes is the suggested introduction time for You Are a Treasure Box. This happens when a new theme is introduced. Once the program has been introduced, little reminders throughout the day to stick a playing piece on the playing board (visual) completes the rest of the game. This part takes a couple of seconds.
Q: Should I use this program for all children in my home?
A: Yes, I suggest using it with all children in your home. Each child has something that can be improved or worked towards. Additionally, it is a program that is made for the enjoyment and learning of children!
Q: One of my children could really us e some extra motivation, though my other is pretty self- motivated, I don’t want to take away anything that she/he already accomplishes as a natural instinct, what should I do?
A: All children are different. I have three. Each one of them has a distinct personality. The Basics, You Are a Treasure Box and Special Agent programs are all designed to supplement what is already there in a child. Some may need more supplementation than others. And, for those children that focus on the negative and need a little more encouragement, these programs give them a way to learn to see the positive.
Q; How do I start using what I already give my children as rewards?
A: This can be tricky. Though, it can be done! You can let your children know that you are going to start playing a game and they will now have the opportunity to start earning rewards. An example from this article is to explain the new Build ME Blocks program in relation to work.
Q: My kids are misbehaving how do I remind them of their mission without it seeming like a bribe?
A: When my children have misbehaved or show poor actions, I ask them what they are working on, this triggers a reminder to them. If they say they don’t know, you can remind them of their Special Agent Missions, The Basics or You Are a Treasure Box. Judging the right time can be tricky. Feel it out. If it doesn’t work one way, try another way.
Q: Don’t these programs have consequences for the negative behavior?
A: Each parent has their way and view of consequences for negative behavior. Negative behavior always needs to be addressed.
The Basics builds a pattern for children, they know there is goal to keep the family meter more full than empty. To reach this goal, a few things can be done pause (gives time to think) before they take action, use good actions and good words.
Special Agent Mission is a program that focuses on actions and behaviors. In this program the suggested consequence is the use of Special Agent Obstacle Busters. Each child is given a mission worth a token value point. Their aim is to earn all of their tokens. When they come upon a negative behavior, they can either choose a Special Agent Obstacle buster to keep the full value of their mission or take their consequence of losing 1 token value of the mission.
The goal is to limit those negative behaviors and grow the positive ones. There are times when there is not time for a game or there is an action that requires more than a Special Agent Mission Obstacle Buster. In that instance, the action needs to be stopped. The method that I use is to have my child stop the action, think about how they are feeling and what happened (in an arranged location, we use their bedroom) and then return to talk about what has happened (with the child or children). Once everything is calmed, the child can be reminded of the structure that has been created (The Basics, You Are a Treasure Box, Special Agent Mission).
