Word Detectives
As children begin to read and listen to the sounds as the read, they are decoding. These sounds, these words looked like a mystery to be solved. Each child is a word detective when they begin to read! And watching them decode is fascinating! Below are a couple of materials suggested to help your child begin decoding or reading.

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Siegfried Engelmann is a great book that has a straight forward plan on how to go about teaching your child to read. I was skeptical at first but as I sat down with this book and my child, the information was easy to relay to him. I had never taught reading before and was very nervous about teaching my child but it turned out great! Read my blog post Reading: The Foundation of a Prosperous Education for more information on how I used this book and the story behind why I chose it and used it!
Academic Success for All Learners complements the lessons in "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" nicely. I like these books because they build confidence in a child as they are learning to read. The pictures come uncolored, if your child has his/her own set, they are able to color the pictures. Combined with the material in 100 Easy Lessons, they learn to read by recognizing letter sounds, blending them together, actual reading and not guessing.
The above programs are not created by Build ME Blocks, they are materials we use for teaching children to read and seeing great results.
